OUR HISTORY....
St. Paul United Church of Christ was originally established by German
immigrants in 1850. The church was erected at the corner of Logan
and Main Streets as the German Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul Congregation
of Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, Ohio.
In 1868 due to serious theological controversies, the congregation
split and we became the St. Paul Evangelical Church. The current structure
was dedicated on August 16, 1871 to accommodate the growing needs
of the Sunday School. The excavation was made by the parishioners
with picks and shovels. The Evangelical and Reformed Churches joined
together in 1934 and in 1957 merged with the Congregational Christian
Churches to form the United Church of Christ.
One of the
highlights of the life of St. Paul United Church of Christ took place
in July, 1969, when a native son of the congregation, Neil Armstrong,
became the first person to set foot on the moon. The congregation
held a prayer vigil for the entire time the flight lasted. Needless
to say this was a wonderful event in the life of St. Paul United Church
of Christ.
To again accommodate the growing needs of St. Paul Church, the Educational
Building and Timmermeister Fellowship Hall were dedicated on June
18, 1967. In 1974, the Sanctuary and basement rooms were again renovated,
and during the summer of 1990, volunteer parishioners painted and
redecorated the educational classrooms and halls. In 1991, we completed
a renovation of our bell tower and put a new roof on the church. In
1994 the Sanctuary was air-conditioned. In 2001, the sanctuary was
renovated with new electrical wiring, paint and carpet in celebration
of our 150th anniversary.
St. Paul United Church of Christ, "the church in the heart of
Wapakoneta," hosted the community ecumenical noontime Lenten
services and luncheons for the first 30 years the program was in existence.
In 1995, the addition of the Logos program into the church
brought more young people into the life of the church.
The people of St. Paul United Church of Christ work together and are
enjoying growth in the search for God in their lives.
